Vanilla / Classic WoW Skinning Guide 1-300

Introduction

Skinning is one of three gathering professions available to players in Vanilla / Classic WoW. It involves skinning slain beasts (and dragonkin) for leather, used primarily by Leatherworkers. It is the easiest of the gathering professions to level but is also generally considered the least lucrative. One key exception to this is Devilsaur Hides, which can provide huge earnings but tend to be dominated by dedicated groups of players on most servers. Still, if you wish to be a Leatherworker, Skinning is the natural pairing. In this guide, we will focus on how to level Skinning from 1 – 300 in Vanilla / Classic WoW.

Before You Begin

Skinning is fairly straightforward, so there’s only a few things to know before you get started:

1)  The only tool required for Skinning is a skinning knife. You can purchase one of these at any general store or Leatherworking supplies vendor. As long as you have a skinning knife in your inventory and an enemy has been fully looted, you should have the option to skin it.

2) In general, the highest-level enemy you will be able to skin is equal to your Skinning level divided by 5. This means that to skin a level 40 enemy, you need 200 Skinning, and to skin a level 60 enemy, you need 300 Skinning. This is calculated slightly differently for enemies between levels 1 and  20. Enemies level 1 – 10 require only 1 Skinning to skin. Enemies level 11 – 20 require Skinning equal to 10 times the enemy level minus 100. For example, a level 15 enemy requires (15 * 10) – 100 = 50 Skinning.

3 )To skin a mob, you do not have to be the one who killed it. As long as the person who killed it fully looted the corpse, you should be able to skin it.

Skilling Up

In this section, I recommend a few good areas to train at each level bracket. However, if you plan to level Skinning as you level your character, you don’t need to worry about training in specific areas. Just be sure to skin every beast you kill and don’t forget to visit your trainer to learn new skill levels before you cap out (available at 50, 125, and 200).
